Santorini Geography

Looking at a Santorini map we can see that the island is the southernmost of the Cyclades islands. Located north of Crete and south of the islands of Ios, Sikinos and Folegandros, to the East is the small island of Anafi.

Santorini and the islands Therasia and Aspronisi are remnants of the volcanic island Strogili. The eruption in 1613 BC resulted the creation of what is today known caldera of Santorini and the destruction of the prehistoric culture of the island.

Santorini is located at of latitude of 36o 19 '56 to 36o 28' 40 north and longitude from 25o 19 '22 to 25o 29' 13 A East. The current semi-circular shape of the island derives due to volcanic eruptions that altered the original round shape of the island. The view from the side of the volcano is rocky and in contrast with the smoothness of its east parts.

The surface of approximately 73 square kilometres, are mostly pumice very receptive to cultivation. Santorini has a humid climate. In the South East part of Santorini is the mountain of Prophet Elias with an altitude of 567 meters consisting from huge rocks and marble, there located the monastery of Prophet Elias from the 18th century. After this mountain is the Mid Mountain or Mountain of St. Stephen with an an altitude of 366 metres, its name derives from the early Christian church that was there. The intermediate neck connecting the two mountains is called Sellada.

The perimeter of Santorini is approximately 36 nautical miles and has six bays the bay of Amoudi or Aghios Nikolaos in pano Meria, the bay of Armeni in the same area, the bay Planos, the bays of Athiniou and Fira and the bay of Balos in Akrotiri. In general Santorini is dry, without lakes, rivers and ravines. The irrigation needs of the island covered mainly by tankers which concentrat the Rainwater and wells. There are on the island three main springs and four curative ones.
