Skiathos travel guide
Travel and tourist guide to Skiathos island
Skiathos is part of the Sporades islands on the north
west Aegean sea. The island is close to the prefecture
of Magnisia and the nearest ports that connecting the
island with the mainland are those of Agios Konstantinos
and Volos. There are also ferries from Thessaloniki. The
easiest way though is to fly to Skiathos from the
airport of Athens. Skiathos has an area of 42km ² and a
population of 3400 inhabitants. The highest point of the
island is at 424 meters above the sea level. The island
of Skiathos has a dense vegetation of pine trees and is
a green island like most of the
Sporades islands. The island has mild winters and
warm summers, but not so hot as the islands of the
Cyclades. Like almost all the islands Skiathos has also
the yearly north winds the meltemia, that keep the
temperature cool from late July to mid-August. The
capital of the island is
Skiathos city and is situated on the south-eastern
part of the island, built in traditional Greek island's
style with small white houses and narrow streets and is
situated on a quiet bay. The nearest beach from Skiathos
town is Ftelia. Most popular and famous beach is the
beach of Koukounaries.
The island of Skiathos is a popular holiday destination
for many tourists. The tourist industry is the main
income for the island that is a reason that Skiathos
during the winter is almost deserted. During the summer,
especially in the months of July and August, Skiathos
has extensive and lively nightlife. Most places are
located in the capital of the island with romantic bars,
small bars and small nightclubs between the small,
narrow streets of the its main town of Skiathos. The
island has long, white sandy beaches surrounding by
trees and the crystal seawater.
Skiathos has many tourist facilities. Many boats during
the summer make day trips around the island including a
visit to Kastro, the beautiful sandy beaches and those
who are difficult to reach like the beach of Lalaria.
The day trips include visits to the nearby islands of
Skopelos and
Alonissos. The only museum of Skiathos is the house
of A. Papadiamantis, located in the heart of the centre
of the capital. The museum was the home of the Greek
monk, poet and writer Alexandros Papadiamantis during
the 19th century.
The small museum exhibits a small collection of
documentation on the life of this old reputation of
Skiathos. The museum is located on a picturesque square,
surrounded by traditional, renovated mansions.
