Hydra accommodation

Hydra is the southernmost island of the Saronic Gulf with a surface of 50 square kilometres and a rocky coastline of 56 km. Thr distance from Piraeus is about is 36 miles and has daily ferries and hydrofoil services .Hydra also is connected by boats to the nearby Peloponnese towns like Porto Heli Nafplio and Ermioni.

Hydra is a rocky island with its highest peak being 593mt high. Hydra use to be famous for the island's cosmopolitan atmosphere during the 60's and the 70's when use to be the beloved summer resort of the aristocracy of Athenian and many Greek tycoons like Niarchos and Livanos. Hydra has a long naval tradition that begun from the Byzantine times and reached its highest peak during the 17th and 18th centuries, when Hydra's inhabitants developed a large fleet of commercial ships ( Galleons ,Schooners ,Frigates ) in the Aegean and further on to the Mediterranean.

With that large fleet the people of Hydra served the Greek Revolution of 1821with great Captains like Koundouriotis, Tombazis, Kriezis and many others. Today on the island, you can see the mansions of those heroic captains and ship owners that helped Greece on its independence revolution.

On the island there are many picturesque areas where you can swim. Places worth a visit are Molos ,Kaminia and Vlyhos. A much unusual but very interesting point of Hydra isthe ban of all motorized vehicles. You can travel its winding streets and steps on foot or, for the romantic ones, by donkey.
