Due to its geographical position Kythnos played an important role in ancient times. The King Philip the 5th of Macedonia in 202 BC installed guards in order to resists the Roman attacks, wherever and indeed after the fall of Andros in 199 BC when the Romans tried to occupy Kythnos after a long siege were forced to leave the island because of strong fortifications. Traces of ancient cities are located at the south-west parts of the island in the location or Rigokastro Evraiokastro and in Kefalokastro location. The Kefalokastro must be the capital of the island which was destroyed by the Turks at the betrayal in the 16 th century. Kythnos was used also as a place of exile first by the Romans.

Under the rule of the Franks the island in 1207 came under the sovereignty of various Houses such as Sanoudos, Kastelli etc. until 1537, when it was occupied by the Turks. In 1600 the Turks killed all males consistently and almost deserted the island and its inhabitants.
