The island of Kythnos in
the western Cyclades between Kea and Serifos, and is 56 miles from the port of
Piraeus and only 2 hours from the port of Lavrio.
Also named Thermia from the 12 th century . The name is due to the hot springs
that exist today in the Bay of St. Irene and Baths. The showers of
Kythnos said
that it was enjoyed by the first king of Greece Otto and the queen Amelia.
It has an area of 99 square km and a coastline about 100 kilometres. It has 90
bays, coves and beaches, most of which are accessible by road. The mountains of
the island are not large, the highest peak is the Petra 333 m high. Main
products of the island are wine, figs, almonds and honey. The climate is
considered very healthy and stays quite mild despite the strong northern winds.
On the island there are two landlocked villages, Messaria with 806 residents and
the village of Episkopi with 797 residents. In addition there are three main
coastal settlements: the port Merichas with about 200 residents, with the hot
springs with curative sources and the Virgin Kanala the homonymous church. Apart
from these there are also several smaller settlements such as St. Dimitrios,
Episkopi, St. Stephanos, Merichas, Houlakia, Agia Eirini and Apokrousi. It has
daily connection with Piraeus, the port of Lavrio, the capital of the Cyclades
Ermoupolis in
Syros,
and other islands of the western Cyclades, with conventional ferries and
high-speed boats is also connected with the islands of Mylos, Serifos, Sifnos,
Kimolos and during the summer is possible with island hopping to visit more
cosmopolitan islands like
Mykonos or
Santorini from Syros or Paros island.
The most beautiful beaches Kythnos are Gaidouromantra, Agios Sostis, Episkopi,
Apokrousi, , Simousi, Rivers, pillar, Naoussa, Lefkes, Merichas Kalafatis,
Houlakia.
The first inhabitants of Kythnos reported to be the Dryopes with their ancient
king Kythnon hence the name of the island called also Dryopis or Ofiousa. During
the Middle Ages it was called Thiramna and from 1143 to indicate the name
Thermia, from hot springs that exist.
In ancient times in Kythnos also had established a thriving colony of the
Ionians Kestor and Kelyfos. The ancient Kythnos people were dealing with
shipping and participated in the Persian wars. The ancient city of Kythnos was
famous for its loyalty and for this reason Aristotle devotes a special study
about Kythnos in his work "About the State". The ancient people of Kythnos were
developed in literature and the arts and highlighted where two painters
Timanthis and Kydia.
Due to its geographical position Kythnos played an important role in ancient
times. The King Philip the 5th of Macedonia in 202 BC installed guards in order
to resists the Roman attacks, wherever and indeed after the fall of Andros in
199 BC when the Romans tried to occupy Kythnos after a long siege were forced to
leave the island because of strong fortifications. Traces of ancient cities are
located at the south-west parts of the island in the location or Rigokastro
Evraiokastro and in Kefalokastro location. The Kefalokastro must be the capital
of the island which was destroyed by the Turks at the betrayal in the 16 th
century. Kythnos was used also as a place of exile first by the Romans.
Under the rule of the Franks the island in 1207 came under the sovereignty of
various Houses such as Sanoudos, Kastelli etc. until 1537, when it was occupied
by the Turks. In 1600 the Turks killed all males consistently and almost
deserted the island and its inhabitants.
