Arta is the second biggest city of Epirus in Greece
The city is built at the same position of the ancient town one of the
major cities of Illyria. In the antiquity it had the name Ambrakia. The
city was founded by the Corinthians around 625 BC.
Arta experienced a great period of prosperity under Pyrrhus in the third
century BC.
After the fourth crusade and the capture of Constantinople The city
experienced a second phase of prosperity.
The town was once owned by the Orsinis and later by the Serbian Empire
and then by various clans of Albania . Arta was conquered by the
Ottomans in 1449 and renamed Narda. It came under Venetian rule in 1717.
It was ruled by France for two years after the Treaty of Campo Formio
then return to the Ottomans who retained until 1881.
