Skiathos is an island with lush vegetation and has more than 60 beaches . The Chora of Skiathos, is the centre of today's life and tourist traffic, which year after year shows an upward trend. The island has suffered from pirate raids during the middle ages. Piracy continued during the short Venetian rule and the Turkish rule. The island of Skiathos had a significant contribution to the navy in the  independence war of Greece in 1821 and became part of the first Greek state.
