Tourist Guide to Santorini island

Santorini island that is called Thira in Greece belongs to the Cyclades islands group. Santorini own its fame and popularity from its worst enemy the Volcano of Santorini witch is one of the four active volcanoes of Greece. In the last eruption of the volcano in 1950 Santorini lived huge destructions equivalent with those of the Kefalonia earthquake in 1953 not to mention the great explosion 3000 years ago that destroyed the whole Minoan civilisation. This volcano though and the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri plus the famous Caldera views and the extensive advertisement on the media and the internet made Santorini one of the most famous islands in the Mediterranean. Within the gulf that is actually the sunken volcano today there are 2 small islands that where created after volcanic eruptions the islands of Palea and Nea kameni. Near by is the small inhabited island of Thirasia that before the great explosion use to be part of the island its self.
Santorini has given a lot of material to all those who believe the Lost Atlantis Myth after the excavations in Akrotiri. Based in a few words that Plato mention a whole literature and thousands of books trying to find the exact location of Atlantis from the Azores islands to Santorini and Crete. Probably Atlantis existed once but this is not the point of this article.

The name of the island Santorini derives from the times of the crusaders who named the island Santa Irene (Santorini), the Greeks after the revolution of 1821 gave back to Santorini its Greek name Thira like in many other areas that their original Greek names had been changed by several conquerors through the ages. Still today though worldwide the island is mostly known as Santorini.
The island like many other islands of the Cyclades like Mykonos suffers from water supply because it does have any natural water supplies. As a result Santorini is not a Green island but because of its dry nature its grapes producing one of the best wines of Greece.

Santorini is not an island of cheap tourism, its fame had as a result prices in hotels with good location and views to the famous sunsets and the Volcano to be extremely high. But even with those prices its very difficult to find cheap Santorini accommodation in hotels or apartments. A whole honeymoon industry has been created in Santorini as the island is a popular destination for many couples that they want to spend their honeymoon in a bridal suite of the luxury Santorini hotels. Another tourist industry are the Cruises, daily in the summer numerous cruise ships approaching the small port of Santorini and crowds of tourists with cameras riding on donkeys or by private coach or the funicular are going up the Caldera edge to the towns of Fira, Oia and Imerivigli to enjoy the views that made this island so famous.
Santorini nightlife is worldwide famous and very intense , noumerus bars and restaurants of all kind of taste are to be found in various tourist resorts of Santorini, but the Santorini beaches are not the best in Greece. The island is connected by air and sea. Ferries to Santorini connecting the island with Athens and other islands daily with more itineraries during the summer season, the same occurs with flights to Santorini island. Santorini airport is busy mostly from April until October.
