Andros travel guide

Andros is located in the Aegean sea in Greece, it belongs to the Cyclades and is one of the largest of this island group after Naxos. Andros is the northernmost of the Cyclades islands and is separated from Evia through the Cavo D'Oro passage one passage that has been always been dangerous for the maritime due to the strong winds and sea currents. Andros has an area of 389 sq. km, with highest point up to 1,000 meters, the island has about 9,000 inhabitants.

Andros is on the west side mountainous, while the eastern slopes are rich with fruit trees and vine-covered valleys. Agriculture generates particularly silk, wine, olives, lemon and animal products (sheep farming). The island has many beautiful beaches ideal for swim and wind surfing. The most important towns and villages are Gavrio, Batsi, Korthi and the capital of Chora. The are hotels, rooms and apartments that will take care the visitor's accommodation in Andros

The picturesquely capital of Andros Chora, located on a narrow peninsula on the east coast of the island. From the on the west coast port of Gavrio there is a regular ferry connection to the mainland (Rafina) and the other Cyclades. The predominantly Greek tourism takes place mainly in Batsi, near to Gavrion, and in the vicinity of Andros City. Especially on weekends many Athenians visit Andros. Andros has kept away from package tourism. Andros was home for famous Greek ship owners families who have help the island in many ways.

The history of Andros goes back to the ancient times of Greece. Andros was first inhabited by the Karians and later by the Ionians who made many colonies in northern Greece in the area of Halkidiki. Later the island was under the Athenian rule, the Macedonian and finally to the Roman. In the middle ages was under the Venetians and later under the Ottomans. It was finally liberated during the Greek revolution of independence.
