Brief history of the Greek Passenger and Ferry fleet

Greece as an island country has a great fleet of Ferries that are serving the numerous Greek islands. Until the end of the 60's the ferries was not in widely used in Greece except the ferries of Rio Antirio . All passenger fleet of Greece was normal vessels. The development started actually from the shipping companies of Typaldos and Eftymiadis who where the first to put ferries on the line Piraeus Crete. After the financial ruin of those two companies the Cretans with Minoan and Anek lines took over the ferry business. Slowly other maritime companies follow the same way and start building ferry boats connecting more and more Greek islands. the same happened in the lines between Greece and Italy. The Karageorgis ferries and Efthymiadis ferries were the pioneers of this important sea connection between Greece and Italy.

Today almost all Greek passenger vessels are ferries. Most of the Greek fleet today has brand new ships build with the latest safety specifications. The routes and distances are today more faster as the new type of Greek ferries has powerful engines reaching up to 20-21 miles per hour for example the route Ancona Patras that use to be 36 hours today its only 19, the same occurs with the routes Piraeus Crete that the fast ferries are doing it in 6 hours about instead of 12 that use to be. The latest development are the Catamarans with high speeds as an example the journey to Mykonos use to be over 6-7 hours today with the high speed catamarans has been decreased to 3 hours from Rafina.
The following ferry lines have most of the routes in the Greek islands and Patras Italy. Anek lines, Minoan Lines, blue star ferries, super fast ferries, Nel lines, GA ferries, Hellenic sea ways, Agoudimos lines, Ventouris lines and other smaller maritime companies with boats, Catamarans and hydrofoils in local island groups.
